Founded in 1994, the International School of Tianjin (IST) is a non-profit, college-preparatory day school for Nursery to 12th grade students of the international community in Tianjin, a major industrial and commercial center in Northern China.
IST is fully accredited by both the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) in the USA and the Council of International Schools (CIS) in Europe. The school is an IB World School authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (Grades 11-12), the Middle Years Programme (Grades 6-10), and the Primary Years Programme (Grades NPK-5).
The school year begins and ends in early August and June respectively, and is divided into two semesters, with 180 student contact days in total. There are eight, 40-minute class periods per day with double periods in most academic subject areas in the secondary school. IST graduated its first class in 2005, with graduates thus far having been admitted to over 200 of the world’s most prestigious universities, including Brown, Berkeley, Cambridge, Cornell, Hong Kong UST, Kyoto, Melbourne, Seoul National, Toronto, and Yonsei.
IST currently enrolls approximately 450 students from 30 different countries, with American, German, French, other Europeans, Korean and Ethnic Chinese students making up the largest percentages. English is the school’s common social language and principal language of instruction, with Korean, German, and Mandarin Chinese constituting the next most prevalent mother tongue languages. Students from 180 foreign invested enterprises currently attend the school, with new students constituting between 17% and 20% of annual enrolment.
There are 63 full-time faculty members, seven of whom are locally hired teachers of Chinese language. IST’s faculty come from 12 different countries with American, Australian, New Zealand, British and Chinese teachers representing the largest percentages. IST teachers typically remain in the school for four years or more with an average annual faculty retention rate of approximately 82%. Approximately 40 of the current faculty have advanced degrees and all are fully certified. The faculty has previously taught at more than 150 different international schools around the world and has an average of 12+ years teaching experience. Teachers are supported by 21 Chinese teaching and student support assistants, all of whom have university degrees and several of whom hold teaching certificates. The non-academic administration includes an additional 43 highly qualified local and expatriate support staff.
