September 2010

Posted Friday, Sep 3, 2010

Dear Parents and Students,

It was a pleasure to see so many parents attending the first Parent Faculty Organization (PFO) meeting this past Wednesday. A hallmark of our school has always been the positive and synergistic relationship that exists between the home and school and I am excited by the commitment and enthusiasm of this year’s committee and parent body to this cause.

Medical Records
Next week the school office will send home reminder notices to those parents who either have not updated their children’s medical forms or who have not yet submitted Application Forms D and E. I kindly request that parents respond immediately to these requests as it is a matter of great importance that we have accurate and up-to-date medical records for all students in our school. Failure to submit these forms may, unfortunately, result in a child being denied access to classes.

Buses for Parents
The school is very pleased to be able to provide parent bus services to and from Ao Cheng for a variety of school events, including PFO meetings and student conferences. Unfortunately we are unable to service a broader range of locations and housing compounds and I kindly request that parents not instruct IST drivers to make detours to alternative locations for personal convenience. The drivers are prepared to stop to drop you off along the standard route but have been instructed not to make detours. Thank you for your support.

IST Yearbook
At the end of each academic year IST publishes the annual Yearbook, a wonderful memoir of the past year at IST. This publication demands a great deal of time and effort from our staff and as a result we try to enlist the assistance of interested members of our parent community with experience in graphic design and in working with Photoshop. If you are at all interested in helping out please contact me, or our publications officer Ms. Radha Kulkarni (radha_kulkarni@istianjin.net). Thank you!

Warm regards,

Steve Moody
Director

The PFO Committee would like to have all parents’ opinion about which event they would prefer in September at IST.

The question was up for orientation at the PFO Parents Meeting on Wednesday September 1st. 2010. The purpose of this event was to start the new school year, by arranging a picnic or a barbecue at IST for new parents as well as old parents to get to know each other and also meet teachers, new as well as old ones.

A little information about each event:

Picnic: For the whole family, students, parents and teachers (Elementary and Secondary).
- Suggested date: Sunday, September 26th. 2010 from 11am. to 1pm.
- Cost will be covered by PFO.
- Different activities for children will be set up at the track field at IST.
- Parents bring in food, blankets etc. for their own family to enjoy.

Barbecue: Only for adults. Parents (No children allowed)
- Suggested date: Saturday, September 25th. 2010 from 3 to 11pm.
- Food and drinks provided from restaurants. Grill and side dishes.
- Ticket price around a 100 RMB a person. No fundraising.

A final decision will be taken Tuesday, September 7th. 2010 by PFO and IST based on the opinions received from parents and teachers.

Please submit your opinion by email to IST_PFO@istianjin.net no later than Monday, September 6th. 2010 at 2pm.

U13 Boys : Mr. Matt Kimber
The U13 boys football team got off to a successful start to the season with a convincing 3-1 win away at TIS. Second half goals from Quentin, Jong Min and Patrick saw the IST Blaze coming back from a from an early 1-0 penalty deficit. Well done to the 13 boys who made the journey and special mention to Simon and Bryan who did not stop running, tackling and showing great commitment throughout the match.

HS Varsity Girls Volleyball : Mr. Scott Fitzgerald and Ms. Sara Bjork
The varsity girls’ volleyball team played at IST in an exciting 5 set match with TIS, losing 3-2. In a well-played match by two strong teams, the IST girls gained valuable game experience, winning two games easily while playing all 10 players. Strong hitting, including back row hitting, from Kim was a leading highlight of the IST team. Very strong serving from Shiori Egawa went along with fine play at setter. Cecilie Damsgaard had a good match hitting, serving, and playing at the net. Ariel Lin continued her strong play at setter. Marcela Bellettini and Melissa Subra played well in the first game of the season. Ibuki Uetsuhara played a strong game in the back row as libero. Substitutes Cassandra Sanz, Emma Seres, and Ayaka Miwa all played well in their first experience at this level of volleyball. The girls start league play this Saturday in Beijing against ISB and DCB.

Go IST Blaze!!

The U14’s Boys : Mr. Martin McMulkin
The U14’s boys soccer team played their first game this week against TIS. They stormed into a two goal lead with Se Jong scoring both. They tired in the second half and allowed TIS to draw level. They had some good chances to win the game but could not beat their goalkeeper. The game ended 2-2. They will be trying to improve their fitness in the coming weeks.

U13 Girls : Ms. Amanda Shaw
An exciting home game against TIS, with an impressive 10-0 win. Working together throughout the game, the opposition was kept at bay by deliberate and well aimed passes from the midfielders, strong defending tackles, and repeat attacks on goal. The tireless trio of offenders - Vanessa, Katie and Min-Jung - maintained their drive until the very end.

U14 Girls : Mr. David Nathan
The Under 14 girls played a great game against TIS.  Every single IST player gave 100 percent effort and as a result overwhelmed a talented TIS outfit by 6 –0. It was a complete team effort with Bo Kyong making some great saves in goal.  Well done girls.
